Bedtime Routine

As little kids, we all probably had FOMO (fear of missing out) around bedtime. I know I was stubborn about going to bed and I can even remember fighting falling asleep on multiple occasions.

Then college hits us like a bus. I don’t know about y’all but I couldn’t seem to get enough sleep, ever! I felt like I was being pulled in a million different directions between school, sorority, sports, and of course, social. There was no time or need for a bedtime routine because going to be sometimes wasn’t an option. Lol. The picture below was taken while I did my year of study at the University of Kentucky. I believe this ” Stride of Pride” was outside of Raising Cane’s around 11am after a Halloween party. As you are reading this, I hope you are smiling and reminiscing on your own college nights!

Now that I am trying to adult, I have developed a solid routine that always puts me right to sleep. I have noticed a giant improvement in the quality of my sleep, which in turn, helps my overall mood throughout the day!

Below is my routine. Take some pointers, leave some behind, but more importantly take your bedtime seriously. Sleep is the time your body heals itself and you need rest to be productive.  As a competitive, bikini division bodybuilder, my coach reminded me on a daily basis not to neglect my sleep. Basically, all of that hard work I was putting in during my wake hours would be going to waste if I wasn’t following through with the sleep. Keep that in mind if you are ever thinking of pulling an all nighter!

Step 1: If I workout, I shower. In the shower, I use a few drops of Eucalyptus oil to help me relax.       If I didn’t workout, I skip to Step 3.

Step 2:  As my old roommate Gabby would say, “LUBE UP”. Lol. Living in super dry climates like Denver and Arizona I find it imperative to moisturize my entire body, regularly. I not only use a thick lotion like, Nivea Extended Moisture Lotion but also use pure, virgin coconut oil on my drier areas like elbows and feet.

Step 3: Wash the face. If I am in the shower I will do the facewash part in there, obviously. I use the Rodan & Fields, Unblemish Regimen and love it. It’s four parts: wash, tone, medicate, moisturize. The moisturizer that comes with the kit has SPF and I am not a fan of it at night so instead, I use a few sprays of this natural Rosewater. It smells beautiful and leaves your face hydrated and never greasy! The Ponds is used just for under my eyes! Because I struggle with adult acne I find this routine is the best way to keep my skin looking fresh! If I have a blemish that needs some attention I dab on some Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. This is one of my new Holy Grail products!

Step 4: Brush your teeth! People who have lived with me think this is so weird. I don’t know if I hate anything more than standing up in front of the bathroom mirror to brush my teeth. HAHAHA I will go anywhere else to do this– my bed, the couch, kitchen, outside, etc. #doyou ! I also always floss and rinse with a mouthwash.

Step 5: Lavender Oil, just trust me. Again, my roommate Gabby showed me this trick. You dab a little oil on your forearms, a tiny under your nose, and neck. This will put you to sleep like a baby.

Step 6: Curl in bed and read. Because I am usually so relaxed by this point I don’t get more than about 2 sentences before I pass out. I started reading instead of watching TV and this has made a huge difference in my sleep so give it a try if you are struggling!

I hope you can take something away from this post and enhance your bedtime routine!
